A Brief History of Cell Phones

1G - is the first generation of mobile phones. These were the wireless telecommunications standards that were used in 1980s until being replaced by 2G.The main difference between 1G and 2G is that the 1G used analogue radio signals while 2G used digital radio signals. 1G phones are not really that popular at that time for it is not just expensive, it is also heavy to carry around. The 1G phone designs are a lot bigger compared to the other generation. This also does not have a lot of features, it is just like a regular phone but without it being connected by wires.

2G – In the early 1990s 2G mobile phone system were introduced. This generation includes IS-136, GSM, IS-95 and iDEN.In 1991 Radiolinja, the first GSM network was built in Finland. In the most areas, the frequencies in Europe were much higher than in USA.2G mobile phones were designed smaller than the past generation. The inventors have improved advanced smaller, more energy efficient and lighter batteries making it easier to carry around. Text messaging also started in 2G network. It was initially only on GSM networks but later also on every digital networks. SMS messaging have been really popular and is a more preferred way of communication with the youth. Along with SMS messaging, 2g phones also allow users to download ring tones and access media content.

3G – The success of 2G phones would then initialize 3G or the third generation technology. The first 3g network was introduced in Japan by NTT Do Co Mo in May 2001. By May 2002 Koreans also developed their own and were the first one to see competition with 3G operators. 3G phones have better security than 2G. It allows the user equipment to authenticate its network where it is attaching to for the user to be sure that the network is the real one and not a faker or impersonator. 3G phones popularize applications such as mobile TV which you can redirect TV channel directly to the phone, video on demand in which your provider can send movies to you, videoconferencing in which you can see the one you are talking to, tele-medicine which can provide you advices about medicines and location based services which a provider may send you traffic and weather updates or find friends that are nearby.
